we have continuing coverage of that legislation on our website. you can go to wbaltv.com. click on politics. legalizing medical marijuana is one step closer in maryland. a procedural move will allow a final vote. that bill would allow pharmacies to distribute to patients to get authorization from a doctor with whom they have had an ongoing relationship. it would be categorized marijuana as a regulated pain medication like morphine, instead of the illegal drug category, like heroin. the bill has bipartisan support but is not expected to become law this year. >> governor martin o'malley had to make a hasty exit after a fire broke out. he was attending a celebration for freshmen lawyers when the fire broke out at 11:15 last night. the security detail noticed the smoke and escorted the governor from the building. everyone else got out safely as well.

>> there is more testimony in the trial of lamont davis and his 16-year-old girlfriend was taken into custody. our reporter is live at the courthouse with details. >> we learned more about the gps system that was used to track the defendant and we learned that to missing witnesses have been found, including his girlfriend, who concluded her testimony today. ms hall was forced to court in handcuffs to finish testifying a day after defying a court order to appear. >> i do not think people appreciate how frustrating and stressful testifying is. you watch on a television show and it happens in five minutes. on wednesday, she had been on the stand for a little over two hours. her children were in a hallway. she wanted food for them and for herself. it is very stressful.

>> the judge warned the 16-year- old she had to answer questions truthfully, remain calm, and behave well, or she could spend the next several nights in jail. she told jurors her boyfriend was at his home with her the morning of july 2, 2009. he was wearing an ankle strap. he was wearing a tracking device during the several days he stayed at her home following the shootings. he claims he was not in the area when a street fight broke out that led to gunfire. a five year-old is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. a teenager was shot in the arm. prosecutors say that teenager was the intended target. the two males fought and won confessed that he shot the little girl. >> she got on the stand, told

the truth, and i am proud of her. >> for lamont davis, questions remain about where he was during the shootings. >> i am curious what the system shows as to where he was between 12:56 pm. >> prosecutors are trying to show discrepancies in the way movements are tracked. if someone tampered with the strap, the information is not reported back to the company in omaha until the units are in range with each other. the company vice-president also told jurors that no tampering violation was reported on the day of the shooting. after ms. hall's testimony, she was arrested on a warrant. according to her attorney, it was a mistake made by the court and he hoped he would have it resolved by tomorrow. i am reporting live from baltimore. >> thanks, barry.

the police to parma wants help finding a police dog. look at this picture. his handler was leaving his home for work when the dog took off after an animal. a neighbor says he saw a gray suv pick up the dog from the roadside in the area of ridge avenue and middle street in hanover, pennsylvania. he is a german shepherd dog. if you have seen him, you are asked to call the baltimore city police. >> a dramatic change in the weather after summer temperatures early this week. we had rain last night and jackets were out for the orioles' home opener this afternoon. >> dramatic changes on the way. the cold front took showers off the coast. we opened the doors for nice baseball weather across the region. last opening day, the winds were gusting to 35. highs were in the low 60's.

across the region, people who normally suffer from pollen allergies have been feeling a lot worse with very high pollen counts. experts trace the cause to our record february snowfalls. john sherman has the details. >> it has been a bit -- a busy day at dr. john bacon's office. >> it feels tighter here. >> all those flowers and trees in bloom all exploded with pollen together, right now. the natural staggering effect was taken away by the snow that sat on everything green for weeks. >> this was an unusual day. the first six to eight allergy patients came in, complaining bitterly that the last day or two they have noticed a flare in symptoms. >> the patient, a talk radio host on a.m. 1090 wbal radio says this year is worse than

ever before. >> this year is particularly difficult. plants are growing well. the pollen has burst forth in the last week or two. i cannot garden, mow the lawn, wash the car. i cannot work at the garage. >> will it get worse? dr. bacon says unfortunately yes. >> the weather is warm. everything has started to pollinate at roughly the same time. the bad news is that oak pollen will hit in mid-april, so we have not hit a peak yet. >> there are things you can do to help. >> sun glasses will reduce the pollen load into the eyes. it is 5:00 to 10:00 a.m. when the pollen tends to peak -- tends to burst forth. shower in the evening. showering is a good idea. you are washing off the pollen. >> you might think last night's

rain would help. dr. bacon says not really. sure in off your car but they can sometimes make elegies worse. it would take two or three days of sustained rain to reduce the pollen counts significantly. this also affects your children. a study found infants born to obese women are 15% more likely to have a heart defect. one-third of the babies have heart problems. researchers used medical records of 7000 women in new york whose children were born with major heart defects. losing weight before conceiving may lower their risk. researchers in new zealand wanted to see if exercise during pregnancy would effect a baby's size. higher birthweight babies have been associated with a risk for child obesity, so researchers in new zealand wanted to see if exercise during pregnancy would affect it.

weather. you see a flurry coming in through northwest maryland. it is dry and kind of cool. we are down to 64 degrees at the airport, 41 in pittsburgh. you can see that pocket of cold air that will sweep through the region tonight and early tomorrow morning. after that, we are in for a warm up that should see the temperatures respond nicely over the weekend. 54 downtown baltimore. 58 at seoul's parade -- at sal sbury. in baltimore, we will see some 30's in the northwest suburbs, with winds making it feel chillier. we are in for a cool overnight. after the sun goes down, temperatures drop quickly. the front is off the coast over the atlantic. the storm is near james bay, dragging in that wind and cool air. keep things dry and sunny. as soon as the wind shifts back

>> this is unacceptable to citizens and to our members. >> new at 5:30, the union of baltimore city firefighters says budgets are to blame for a firefighters injury. he was seriously injured rescuing people inside a burning house earlier this week. the union is planning city budget cuts that led to the rotating closures of fire stations. we have more on both sides of this story. >> the city started doing rotating closures of fire stations, four fire stations a day last july. the fire department says it is a danger -- the firefighters' union says it is a danger to public safety, but the city says it is as safe as always. the call came in for a fire on liberty heights avenue. the first to fire agencies were out on calls.

the third was closed as part of budget cuts. the fourth station in line responded. >> a well rehearsed plan of what we do. anytime you start adding more time into that and start going long distances, you please everybody at risk. >> they say that is what happened. a water truck did not get to the scene right away and a paramedic on the first truck ran into the building to save people inside. he had to jump out a third story window. he broke several bones and suffered burns to his hands and arms. >> the claim that the firefighter suffered injuries because we were not appropriately adequate or had insufficient units on the scene -- a question that. >> the chief of the city fire department said the city is looking at a $121 million budget deficit and every department is affected. the fire department still has the tools and manpower to do their job.

the union disagrees. >> our fire department is not getting less busy. they are also using the fire apparatus of our members to help support the ems system. which is fine. the problem is we do not have the resources to do everything for everybody all the time. >> cartwright would like to see data supporting the theory that the rotating closures have negatively affected public safety. >> we have dedicated and committed members. anytime we get a call, we are going to be there as fast as we can. >> the new budget starts july 1. it is not finalized. cartwright is optimistic it will include money for the fire department to continue doing that. the firefighter who was injured remains in shock trauma tonight but is expected to be ok. kevin cartwright says the department sends their best wishes to him and his family. i am reporting live from west

>> covering the nation tonight, a close call for a connecticut man. a tractor slammed into the wall of his home as he sat inside watching television. the driver got out and the big wave rolled 800 feet down the street. police ruled the incident was an accident. a former dentist accused of using paper clips in root canals goes before a massachusetts judge. he says he is not guilty of using paper clips and billing medicaid for the stainless steel posts he should have used. the former dentist is also charged with assault and illegally prescribing drugs.

75. >> in tonight's "consumer alert," toyota executives stop in kansas city to have been dealers for helping them rebound from recalls. toyota executives withheld information about accelerator problems. the company faces a $60 million fine for the cover-up. put a stance by the repairs it has made. a january e-mail stated, "we need to come clean." five days later, they recalled more than 2 million vehicles to address sticking accelerator pedals. ridership was up 4.3% during 2010, with the president of amtrak citing the improving economy and high fuel prices as factors. we have a warning for facebook and twitter users.
